Will your business SWiM?

In launching its latest State of the Nation: Water report in June 2012, The Institution of Civil Engineers concluded that “the challenges facing the UK’s water security are with us, are serious and require immediate attention”. While flood risk management remains high on the water agenda in many parts of the country, the ICE report rated that current UK water security is only “four out of ten”, which indicates looming pressure on water resources in terms of supply and demand.

Supporting these stark warnings, The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management have published study
findings that suggest very dry years will increase in occurrence probability by around seven per cent, prompting calls for more innovative approaches to managing water and behavioural changes, including a better general understanding of water’s
“value”.

Furthermore, escalating water charges experienced since the privatisation of water companies may be just the beginning of
inevitable measures required to secure future water supplies. High population growth combined with the predicted effects
of climate change will exacerbate the problem, increasing the need to protect a precious resource and make it authentically
sustainable.

This will rapidly create a compelling business case to shift towards Sustainable Water Management and the industry leading alliance; SWiM for innovation, investment and infrastructure.

Business Resilience

By adopting a sustainable and integrated SWiM approach towards sustainable water management, it is possible to significantly increase water security and business resilience by promoting and optimising the use of on-site water resources such as groundwater, rainwater and greywater. These alternative sources of water can be used for a wide range of applications including, irrigation, laundry, toilet flushing, vehicle washing or even potable consumption (with appropriate treatment).

A SWiM solution would explore ways to optimise water (and finance) from the following techniques (although not limited to)
and associated infrastructure, leading to multiple benefits:

  • Forensic Water Charges Investigation
  • Water Audits, Surveys & Appeals
  • Metering & Data Solutions
  • Infrastructure Investigation & Rehabilitation
  • Greywater Recycling
  • Groundwater Abstraction
  • Rainwater Harvesting
  • Pollution Control
  • Sustainable Drainage (SuDS)
  • Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD)
  • Surface Water Disconnection & Abstraction
  • Flood Risk Management
  • Ground Source Heating and Cooling

Integrated Solution

SWiM is a highly specialist service that will guide your project or business through the different stages required to deliver an authentically sustainable and integrated water management solution, from the initial project appraisal report through to detailed design, construction and commissioning (turnkey). SWiM is primarily aimed at projects or businesses with an abnormal water demand and/or water related security concern. When coupled with a suitable catchment area and/or other opportunities to recycle, abstract or harvest water, an integrated SWiM solution is typically intended to present an attractive payback period and robust return on investment (ROI). In addition, it is an authentic commitment to a sustainable business plan and assurance of future water security, business resilience and the achievement of water related sustainability performance under Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM.
