Bordeaux - Matmut Atlantique (France 2013)

France has been awarded the organization of the UEFA European Cup in 2016.

Bordeaux was selected as a star venue and has constructed a completely new, state of the art stadium to host 5 of the games, including one quarter-final.

With a capacity of 43,000 spectators, the new stadium will be the new home of FC Girondins de Bordeaux of Ligue 1. It is also designed to host rugby matches, concerts and other future events. The stadium was designed by the famous Swiss architects Herzog and De Meuron, who previously designed the Olympic Stadium in Beijing – called the Bird’s nest.

Aquality was selected to provide a unique and totally bespoke water management system for the new venue. The team’s experience and skills made them the natural choice for a project of this scale

With the climate in South West France and the high cost of water the prime requirement was the need for irrigation.

Therefore it was decided to use the rainwater of the 4 main stand roofs totalling 20,000m2. The water is collected in 4 storage tanks of 200m3 each – 800m3 in total.

Aquality and EGIS (M&E consulting engineers) as well as Herve Thermique (M&E contractor) worked in harmony in order to make the rainwater harvesting system on this project a success. This state of the art system will not only supply regular water for a great pitch but will save the stadium real money over time.

This is a totally bespoke system by Aquality created to fit the specific requirements of the stadium. A unique combination of filters, pumps and controls manage the water reservoir held in the tanks and supplies the 60m3 of water required, each time the pitch is watered.
